Introduction to YSJ university

York St John University is a dynamic and ambitious institution at the heart of historic York, known for its commitment to widening participation, academic excellence, and community impact. We are one of the fastest-growing universities in the UK, with a strategy that places inspirational learning and applied research at the centre of everything we do. Our students benefit from a supportive, inclusive environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, professional development, and meaningful engagement with real-world challenges.

The School

Law is a vibrant and rapidly developing part of York Business School. Our LLB programme, launched in 2018, has grown quickly in size and reputation, and in 2020 we established the York St John Law Clinic, offering students hands-on experience in giving legal advice and assistance under the supervision of experienced staff. The Law Clinic forms an integral part of our teaching, allowing students to apply legal principles to real-life cases, develop practical skills, and gain confidence in professional practice. Across all our programmes, we emphasise personal and skills development, employability, and placing law in context to strengthen analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced candidate to join us as a Senior Lecturer in Law. This role is ideal for a candidate with academic skills and substantial experience supervising students in a legal advice setting, particularly within a university law clinic environment. You will play a key role in designing and delivering high-quality teaching and mentoring our students in both academic and practical aspects of law as well as supporting less-experienced colleagues.

Required Skills and Experience

The successful candidate must have significant experience supervising students within a university law clinic and expertise in two or more of the following areas of Law: mental health law, conveyancing, medical law, property law, or asylum and immigration. Additionally, we expect to see proven ability to deliver high-quality, student-focused teaching across a range of settings: lectures, small groups/ seminars, developing assessments and supporting students through pastoral and academic tutoring. Candidate should have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (or equivalent) and a strong commitment to supporting student learning, employability, and professional development are required. Experience in curriculum development and mentoring colleagues is desirable.

The ideal candidate would be a Solicitor or Barrister with practicing certificates, or have a relevant PhD alongside substantial student supervision in a Law Clinic.

We offer an opportunity to work in a supportive and innovative academic environment, supervise and shape the next generation of legal professionals, and join a collaborative team committed to excellence in teaching, student experience, and applied learning.
