The Team

ITS (Innovation and Technology Services) is the University's IT directorate, responsible for the maintenance and onward development of IT services that support the University's business needs and the development and design of innovative new services in support of the University's Digital Strategy.

The placement will provide an opportunity to work with colleagues across the wider ITS department, including Service Desk, Applications, Networks, Infrastructure, and Media & Digital. The student will gain practical experience of how these teams collaborate to deliver IT services, support University operations, and contribute to the development of new and existing services.

The Role

This one-year placement role will provide two students with practical experience of IT service delivery, technical support, and project work across the University. The post-holder will work alongside colleagues across ITS, supporting the delivery and development of IT services while building their technical knowledge and professional skills.

The role will include working with the IT team to provide basic first-line support to students and staff, assisting with routine enquiries, and following agreed procedures for escalating issues to specialist technical colleagues. The placement student will also have opportunities to support colleagues in the maintenance and development of University software, applications, IT hardware, data integrations, and supporting documentation.

The post-holder will contribute to the wider work of ITS, working collaboratively with colleagues to design, develop, test, and document systems as defined by the line manager. They will also support departmental records, standards, and documentation, and may contribute to IT projects and service improvement activities.

The placement is intended to provide a broad introduction to professional IT services, allowing the student to develop practical technical, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while gaining an understanding of the different career pathways within IT.

Required skills and experience

The successful candidate will have a genuine interest in IT and a willingness to learn and develop their technical skills. They will be able to work effectively as part of a team, communicate clearly with colleagues and users, and approach problems in a practical and positive way.

They will have:

• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly to non-technical individuals.
• An interest in IT support and a willingness to develop knowledge of IT hardware, software, applications, and University IT services.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues across ITS to solve problems and deliver IT services.
• Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise tasks and complete work to agreed deadlines.
• An understanding of the importance of documentation and maintaining accurate records in IT support and service delivery.
• A willingness to learn, take responsibility for tasks, and develop technical and professional skills throughout the placement.
• A proactive approach to problem solving, with the ability to remain positive and seek support when faced with unexpected challenges.

Desirable skills and experience:

• Experience using Microsoft 365 tools.
• Previous experience in IT support, helpdesk, or customer-facing technical roles, including voluntary or academic experience.
