Introduction to YSJ University

York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.

As one of the fastest-growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.

The School

Law is a growing and dynamic part of York Business School. Our LLB programme launched in 2018 and has developed rapidly; in 2020 we established the York St John Law Clinic, which gives students hands-on experience in providing legal advice under the guidance of experienced staff. From 2023 we introduced a suite of MLaw and LLM programmes. Clinical teaching is embedded within our programmes, enabling students to apply legal principles in authentic contexts, build confidence and gain experience in professional ways of working. We have high expectations of, and aspirations for, our students and we aim to create engaging teaching and assessment which fosters understanding and develops valuable transferable skills, enhances employability and places law in context to support analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving. We pride ourselves in knowing our students as individuals and in offering high levels of personal support.

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic new lecturer to join us on this journey through supervising students in York St John Law Clinic and contributing to teaching on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This will include delivering lectures, seminars, workshops and small group tutorials. You will develop engaging teaching materials and assessments and offer timely and constructive feedback. You will be allocated students for whom you are responsible for providing pastoral support throughout their time with us. Over time, you will be expected to contribute towards our developing research agenda.

Required skills and experience

You will have experience as a solicitor, barrister or legal executive, and demonstrate either teaching experience or an aptitude for teaching gained through training, supporting or supervising trainees/apprentices. You will have experience in private client and/or Court of Protection work and be able to contribute to the delivery of our Wills & Administration of Estates, Mental Health Law & Practice, Medical Law, Asylum & Immigration or property-oriented modules utilising the knowledge acquired through your professional practice. You will have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or be willing to work towards achieving it within 18 months of your appointment.

We are open to applications from candidates who wish to work part-time, perhaps alongside maintaining a role in legal practice.

We encourage candidates to get in touch to arrange a discussion or visit to explore the opportunity further before submitting an application.
