The Role

For almost 200 years, York St John University has transformed lives of people from all backgrounds through the power of education. York St John is among the top 30 universities nationally for both overall student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2019) and for the percentage of graduates who are in education or employment within six months of graduating. Over the next few years, the University is embarking upon a series of major initiatives including a sister campus in London and a new Creative Centre opening on our York campus in 2021. The foundations have been laid for a bold and exciting future. 

Under the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Professor Karen Bryan, the University is now seeking to recruit a Pro Vice Chancellor (Learning and Teaching). The new PVC will provide strategic and academic leadership to improve the impact and outcomes of the academic student experience across the University. The appointee will be tasked with developing and delivering an ambitious learning and teaching strategy in order to achieve a strong Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) rating next time round and improved NSS performance. The Sunday Times recently ranked York St John in the top ten institutions in the country for teaching quality. The new PVC will work very closely with the Student Union and the wider student body, ensuring provision of high quality and transformative academic support. The PVC will report to the Vice-Chancellor and be a full member of the small and newly formed leadership team.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader with academic credibility and senior management experience gained in the Higher Education sector. They will be of professorial standing. They will bring significant experience of delivering excellence in learning and teaching, academic delivery and student experience, and will have led complex change. Excellent knowledge of policy developments in the HE sector and the TEF and NSS will be critical. Candidates must be able to foster a culture of inter-disciplinary team working, make tough decisions, and inspire a community around common aspirations.
