Geography at YSJ

Geography is a vibrant and growing academic unit within the School of Humanities. The subject was established at York St John University in 2014, and now has c.120 students across three programmes: BSc Geography, BSc Environmental Geography, and BA Human Geography. We have established a strong sense of community among staff and students, and an emphasis on active learning, with increasing links with organisations in York and beyond. In 2019 we achieved 100% overall satisfaction in the NSS, and our students voted us ‘Best Course’ in the York St John Students’ Union Awards 2020. 

The role

We are seeking an enthusiastic Lecturer to join our Geography team for a fixed term (maternity cover) of up to twelve months. Most of your work will involve teaching in a variety of settings, including online and face-to-face; assessment; and the provision of pastoral and academic support to students, including supervising undergraduate dissertations. Teaching may include a requirement to attend a residential field trip in semester 2. You will join a small team of highly collegial staff, who enjoy working together to provide a high-quality experience for our students and are all active in research and publication.

Key requirements

The successful candidate will have expertise in biogeography/ecology, with an interest in nature conservation. Familiarity with ArcGIS, and with statistical techniques relevant to understanding environmental change, are essential. Alongside specialist teaching, you will be required to contribute to modules that support the development of students’ research skills and professional awareness. Prior experience of online teaching would be advantageous.   

It is essential that candidates hold a doctoral level qualification or are near completion. The post is available as soon as possible following interviews on 4th August.
