About York St John University

York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.  As one of the fastest growing universities in the U.K over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset. We are proud to have been involved in teacher education at YSJ since 1841.

The Department

Initial Teacher Education (ITE) is part of the School of Education, Language and Psychology. Within ITE we offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes - a three-year BA Primary Education programme, a one-year PGCE Primary programme (both university centred and school-centred) and a one-year PGCE Secondary school-centred programme in a range of subject areas. Partnership and collaboration are at the heart of our ITE programmes, and we work with a broad range of partners/schools across the region. Our partnership is well-established and highly regarded across the region with many of our student teachers employed in local and regional schools.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic part time (0.4) Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education (Primary) to join our team. Primary school experience is necessary and we are looking for someone from either a school or ITE setting with a specialism in English as an Additional Language (EAL) and/or Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND).  As the largest provider of ITE in the region the successful applicant would be joining a large team that supports around 550 student teachers each year. As such there are exciting opportunities to work in subject teams for all primary subject areas and be part of a thriving academic and research culture.

Required Skills and Experience

It is essential that applicants possess a combination of both professional and academic qualifications. The post holder should therefore have qualified teacher status (QTS), school teaching experience and experience of working with ITE students/programmes. Please make it clear in your application the level of expertise you have in EAL and/or SEND. The ability to support teaching in wider Professional Studies would be welcome.

The majority of your work will involve teaching in a variety of settings, including small group tutorials/seminars and lectures; assessment; and the provision of pastoral and academic support to students. Your work will also involve working with our partnership schools.

For applicants not currently in possession of a doctoral qualification there will be an expectation to work towards this.
